2016 Firewire Quiver For Hire – Updated April 2016

Unibrow

Dimensions: 6’6  X 20 1/2  X 2 7/8  Liters: 40.4 L

Designer Dan Mann explains, “The UNIBROW has roots in a design I’ve been riding as my regular short board, mixed with what I’ve learned from designing and riding the Dominator, Sweet Potato and Potato-Nator. The outline curve is compressed from a regular shortboard without sacrificing the width needed to maximize paddling and planing speed.

The goal was to design a very high-performance shortboard that didn’t feel too ‘bulky’ in good surf when you can ride something other than a groveler. The rail profile is dropped and very sensitive, especially through the tail. The bottom has an aggressive single concave that starts in the nose, carries through the deep spot forward of the fins and splits into a subtle double concave that then directs the water flow to the inside of the front fins”.

Sub Moon Firewire

Dimensions: 6’8” x 21” x 2 5/8”
Liters: 37.4 L
Tail: Moon

The SUBMOON is the ultimate FUNshape. Designer Nev Hyman explains: “We combined a contemporary rocker and concaves and even thickness distribution with a quirky FUNshape outline that encourages a more vertical shortboard approach to the traditional longboard style of surfing. The outline has generous curve between your feet, which encourages the board to get on rail and TURN! The narrower moon tail provides bite, drive and direction, and the snub nose carries area forward for a bit of tip hang-cheater five FUN.”

Tomo Vanguard Firewire

VANGUARD (Tomo Model)
5ʼ9”  x  19 1/4”  x  2 11/16”  (35.6L)

* Damaged – Currently not available (updated Aug 16, 2016)

The Modern Planing Hull represents a radical change in the approach to high performance surfboard design and the Vanguard model is the result of precise mathematical formulas and geometry. The hydrodynamic architecture of the Vanguard opens the door to a fresh approach to surfboard design and the art of riding waves. Inspired by the incredible feats of athleticism exhibited by today’s top professional surfers, Tomo (Daniel Thomson) has created a design that further helps 21st century surfers expand their abilities. Higher degrees of speed, electric wave attack and radical aerial potential are all possible with this highly tuned machine.

Evo Tomo

EVO: 5’6″  x  19 3/4″  x  2 9/16″  (32.2L) Tomo Model

EVO (Evolution) is a new take on the MPH design, utilizing softer features and more outline curve to encourage a smoother transitions and a more ‘in the pocket’ line of attack. A wider central wide point comparative to the Vader, the EVO should be considered favorable to smaller weaker waves, however like most Tomo MPH Designs , the EVO will still be quite functional in overhead waves conditions.

Maintaining an almost symmetrical outline and a completely unique and highly innovative “Double inside single concave into split quad concave” planing hull, The EVO feels as if it’s almost ‘levitating’ on the water! Yet once on rail, it has a precise rail sensitivity and hold. The EVO should be ridden as short as possible with user friendly volumes packed into the shortest MPH sizings yet offered by Tomo.

nano

Nano: 5′ 6″ x 18 3/4 x 2 3/8″ – 28.6 L

The original MPH (Modern Planing Hull). The NANO is the stock MPH and a true example of a 21st century modern thruster. It is a user friendly all around board but a radical performer with free flowing speed and a very natural controlled ride. Effortlessly fast and loose, yet predictable and drivey, the NANO ticks all the boxes. The rider really feels as though they can pull off any maneuver and it rides with a very pure sensation of flow.

The NANO features a clean, foiled shape, a wide point forward of center, a round nose for smooth turns and a wide chopped tail with soft corners for exceptional speed and glide. The straight rail line through the back end of the board will provide the necessary control through turns. The Nano has a surprising range with good edge control in bigger punchy waves.

Ride this one in the middle to the performance end of your preferred volume range in thigh to slightly overhead surf. Ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Amigo

The Amigo
6’0 x 19 5/8″ x 2 1/2″ (30.4L)

The heart of the Amigo is a very fast, very user-friendly rocker that not only gains speed easily, but also has a loose, snappy feel in all kinds of waves. The outline is full; with a nice hip leading into a wide tail block, which adds to the speed but lets it break free where you want it to. The bottom has single concave running all the way through, with just a touch of double concave between the fins. This combo gives lift to get the board planing on top of the water easily and helps maintain speed through flatter, weaker sections. If you love riding a stubbie, but you crave a more high performance feeling, the Amigo is going to be the board for you.

v4 Tomo Hire Mentawai

V4: (Tomo Model)
5’8″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4 (25.8L)

Incorporating Tomo’s Modern Planing Hull (MPH), the V4 was born through Daniel’s ongoing quest to gain more speed and stability in the modern short board without compromising responsiveness and directional control. The V4 maintains a considerably narrow, forward of center wide-point and straightened rail line to emphasize the classic ‘Tomo post-modern Hydrofoil curve’, and includes a 5/4/3 fin option.

In a variation of the Vanguard’s hull, the V-4’s bottom contours feature a double barrel concave through the center of the tail forlift and speed and small side bite channels were added off the rail for precise bite and control during turns.

The V4’s clean outline, bottom contours and foil will provide excellent speed and lift in small surf yet will have incredible hold and control when the surf is overhead.

Sweet Potato
Dimension: 5’4″ – 21 1/2 – 2 1/2
Liters: 35.7
Tail: Round

The Sweet Potato dramatically changes the ratio between the length and width of a board while still allowing the design to perform at a very high level.

Designer Dan Mann explains, “The aggressive bottom contour creates considerable lift and the deep double concave with a ‘spine’ down the middle divides the board in half isolating the fins, rocker and bottom on one side of the board at a time. This allows the board to get on a rail quickly. The Sweet Potato is the board you should always bring on a surf check, and you’ll find yourself ripping on small days where you’d otherwise go home”

Hashtag Firewire
Dimension: 6’0 X 19 1/2 X 2 5/8 (31.0L)

Come springtime, every designer’s phone starts to ring. The calls come in hot from pros looking to incorporate the best parts of their winter quivers into a board that specializes in smashing lazier waves. This year was no different and when Nev got the calls, the HASHTAG was the result.

Starting with a bit of Hellrazor DNA, Nev added volume and reduced the tail rocker giving the board more drive and squirt when the waves lose a bit of steam. The stepped round tail keeps the board feeling buttery when linking maneuvers and maximizes bite to allow for a vertical attack when desired. The HASHTAG has modest entry rocker and a mellow double concave starting near the middle of the board that deepens as it travels through the fins. This makes it super lively when surfed on rail and gives experienced surfers the tools to be aggressive in the pocket.

Look to ride the HASHTAG in a familiar performance volume in all conditions the ocean can throw at you from waist high to overhead. The added volume and eased rocker makes this board a versatile performance option for intermediate to advanced surfers.

slab

Dimension: 5’11”  X  18 7/8″  X  2 5/16 Liters: 27.3L
Dimension: 6’1″  X  19 1/8″  X  2 7/16 Liters: 30.1L

The Slab by Pyzel represents John John Florence’s ideas refined into his perfect free surfing model. John John wanted 3 inches off the nose of his normal shortboard and an increased tail rocker. This resulted in a fuller nose, fatter top section and an extremely high performance fun board that goes well in a range of conditions.

pyzalien
Dimension: 5’11  X  19 1/8  X 2  5/16
Liters: 29.6L

* Damaged – Currently not available (updated Aug 15, 2016)

The PyzAlien is a great all- around performance board, designed to keep speed and flow in weaker conditions, while feeling lively and loose in all types of waves. The fuller outline, wider tail and slightly wider, flatter nose help to produce speed and drive, and make it a fast, easy paddler.

It has a lot of curve through the tail rocker, and that, combined with the bottoms contours of single/double concave running into a nice bit of VEE off the tail keep snappy yet controlled when you tip it onto the rail. A great board for a wide range of waves and conditions, the PyzAlien feels just as good in waist-high slop as it does in overhead juice and will help you get the most out of your everyday sessions.

* Damaged – Currently not available (updated Aug 15, 2016)
Liters: 28.1L

THE SPARTAN maintains drive and speed through flatter sections. The single concave throughout adds to the speed and the subtle hip in the tail makes it easy to redirect.

The slightly pulled in tail gives bite and drive through turns, and true to Michel’s style, THE SPARTAN loves big carves in powerful waves, but still feels great in weaker surf. A great board for everyday sessions in all kinds of waves.
