Report Mid August 2010
Hi Crew,
Stickman here with another report from Macaronis Resort.
Well another couple of trips down and some very happy punters. Surf over the past 2 weeks has been a bit of a mixed bag with swell and wind directions changing frequently. Macaronis has been very consistent which defintely makes this one of the best waves around. Always breaking from low tide to high tide and winds either off shore or onshore, it doesnt really matter.
Day trips to Batcave and further north to HT’s and Lances Left have produced some great waves and a chance for guests to have a look around the area and sample some different spots. Snorkeling and fishing has also been popular, with a few coral trout being caught very close to the resort.
We had a couple of beginners in the camp last week who enjoyed small waves at "inside macas" or "mini macas" and also "fish fingers" at the mouth of our lagoon. They had a great time and their abilities definitely went up a notch after their stay here at Macaronis Resort.
To finish the trip off, the guests and staff got together in the restaurant for a party to celebrate Indonesian Independants Day or Hari Merdeka as it is known here. Beers and music flowed with nearly everyone hitting the dance floor to cut up the rug. A great night had by all.
Ok, until next time, enjoy the pics.

Report late July 2010
Hi All,
The Stickman here, back for the first time since 2008. And wow what a way to return to The Mentawai’s and Macaronis Resort. Our surf guides Nico and Hazza said it was some of the best waves of the season and through my years of being out here I can tell you it doesn’t get much better here at Macas. With 8 guests in the camp and 1 or 2 boats max in the bay who could ask for a better trip. Our new 2 mooring buoy system is working great for boats and camp.
Todd Holland (ex pro surfer) was celebrating his marriage to Loren. Once again congrates guys. He hasn’t lost anything still charging and getting some of the deepest backhand barrels of the trip. Loren wasn’t to be upstaged either charging what Todd said to be some of the largest waves he’d seen her ride.
The 3 Aussie boys (Pat, Nick and Jamie) had a ball as we all did, but they did stitch us up with their “half hour of power” drinking sessions.Hahaha
Marcos riding his 8 6” short board scored some classic waves as well. We were getting worried when his wife Angela didn’t venture out of her villa for 3 days tho but when she finally came to the restaurant she really did come out of her shell. LOL
The grommet Christian after a roasting from the boys got one of the best barrels of his life. Good on ya mate. And not forget Snakey consistently surfing and always up for a bintang, Cheers mate
Our resident guest Peter ( Purple ) Hayes unfortunately will be leaving us at the end of this trip and will be greatly missed by all staff around here. Hayze comes to Macaronis Resort every year and every year extends his trip to stay longer. We all hope to see him back again soon.
Well crew it’s great to be back.

Report May 2010
Hey crew, as we were a bit late with our reports for May, we have made a couple of short movies of some of the sessions out here at macas, thanks to Andrew Bailey for helping out with this, and we still got another one to come still being edited of the Byron boys.... so stay tuned......you can find the written surf report below these clips.... cheers!!
Report May 2010
Gday Crew
Sorry for falling behind on the surf reports, waves have been pumping here as usual. The mooring buoy system is now fully implemented at Macaronis since April 20 and resort guests have been enjoying surfing at macas with maximum 2 boats in the bay. This is a great break through to provide an exciting experience for all surfers visiting Macaronis, either by staying at Macas Resort or whilst visiting on a Charted boat – no more traffic jams in the bay, stoked!!
We have had some top trips in May, with the Newcastle boys visiting earlier on, fantastic trip with great waves and plenty of them to go around, hehehe that trip was tainted by a few too many flaming lamboghini’s on a couple of the nights, on ya Darrell for getting that one started. Some interesting video footage too....
Then we had Adriano De Souza and Silvana Lima stay for 2 weeks, first week we had a heavy storm pattern but fortunately the next week dished up some epicness at Greenbush, Rednuht and the bush. Silvana recently just won the comp in Peru and publically thanked Macas as the wave assisted in perfecting her surfing for that event. Adriano was absolutely ripping as usual, and it was a pleasure to have him stay with us again.
Later we had Sol Baliey and his dad Andrew among other punters who shredded macas to pieces, and later the Byron boys hit macas with tracks magazine including Danny Wills, Kieren Perro and Garrett Parkes who joined Soli at Macas for a week of left hander madness. The boys scored the Bush on fire first up, then later Macaronis served up its stock standard with boys showing everybody what can be done in one of the most high performance lefts on the planet.
Just yesterday we ended the trip, was a bit of a finally as Billy came in with a big cut on his eye hit by the rail, Barts sprained his ankle whilst in the tube, Col got his gut shredded going too deep, Fisher from the mango even got a shredding, in fact there was a bit of carnage all round, as the new swell kicked in to say goodbye to the Byron lads and welcome a new group of guests to Macas Resort.
The week ahead looks great for swell, 2 – 2.5m for most of the week and already there have been some epic tubes had by all the crew, whilst guests that have already been here for a week are pumped to get some more Greenbush action ASAP with a nice south swell on the way.
Ok crew, that’s about it from us, we still have plenty of spots left for anybody that would like to join us this year, just keep in mind our trips begin on Tuesdays and end on Thursdays, so just drop us a line if your interested to come and get some waves with us.....
Cheers

Surf Report 25 April 2010
Well it’s all been a bit of a blurrr, we have had some insane waves with very few people in the water.
End of last trip we spent most of our time surfing at Macas and Macas Right, after scoring epic Greenbush earlier on in the trip (photos shown in previous surf report).
Mark and Jason have extended for another week again making their total duration of stay 5 weeks!! A record I think….. after Claus.
Gerry left after extending from 1 week to 3, Jack just left the other day after extending from 9 nights to 12, Graham wanted to extend, just a few extra days to catch the new swell, but couldn’t let the missus down on her birthday; he’ll be back he says.
On Wednesday we had new guests Marty, Alex, Pete, Jesse and KC arrive, just in time for the swell that hit on their arrival. The swell built throughout the morning with the crew enjoying some clean Macas perfecto, and then the arvo served up some chunkier waves again.
I enjoyed the arvo session with just 5 guys out and the northerly breeze making the drops interesting, but the barrels were still there for the picking. The late arvo session was solid, I watched it from the tower with camera in hand hoping to get a nice barrel shot with the traditional Macas sunset in the background, but I only confirmed that my photography skills are below average, should have gone surfing instead…
All the crew got great waves the first day of the trip, sharing with Palagic and Deborah on the macas moorings, all top guys to surf with.
On Thursday, it was a field day. I decided to wait out the morning and do the arvo session again, probably not the best call to make, as some of the crew came in saying the morning session was the best surf of their lives. Alex was a stand out getting some serious back shacks, Jesse also getting some great tubes. On the Thursday we shared with Palagic and Addiction crew.
The arvo session on Thursday dropped out a bit, whilst the forecasters had said the ‘peak’ of the swell was supposed to be at midday. Considering I had waited for the arvo session, this reconfirmed the philosophy of “see it,… surf it”. Anyways there were still a few fun ones, my only concern was that the swell might die out quicker than expected, but this fortunately didn’t happen.
On Friday and Saturday the surf was very consistent in the 4-5 foot range, with still some nice tubes on offer and very smackable lips at macas. Christian took some of the crew down to Roxies where they scored some super fun smackable rights; they stayed there all day with 3 solid surf sessions arriving back at macas at 4pm.
Friday we shared at Macas with Deborah and Palagic and later in the arvo Palagic departed, whilst myself and Jack enjoyed a late arvo session with just 4 others in the water. We enjoyed some dredgy little shacks that arvo with the swell having some thicker groundswell qualities and coming in slightly more from the west angle, causing it to break a bit faster down the reef.
Saturday was a chill out day just staying around Macas area, however in the morning 5 boats had shown up so was a bit busy, until the excess boats left leaving just Star Kuat and Midas using the moorings. Macas Resort guests got back out there in the arvo and scored some very fun waves, plus a few of the boys even decided to pick a few off at Macas Right.
The photos of Saturday are shown in this surf report, you can only imagine some of the other great waves we have been scoring here on a daily basis. For those that would like to keep up with what’s going on then join our Facebook Group “Macaronis Resort Mentawai Islands Indonesia”.
We’ll be back with another surf report soon, hope you enjoy the photos taken Saturday 24 April featuring Macas and Macas Right.
For anybody planning a surf trip we still have plenty of room throughout the season so drop us a line if you’re keen….
Cheers

Surf Report Mid April…
Hey Crew
Well here is a quick report for you all.
We have had some very consistent waves here at Macas the past week with waves in the 4 – 6 feet range. Conditions have been great with mainly glassy conditions. Our most recent swell pushed from the South initially, giving us the opportunity to hit Greenbush, located a half hour speedboat ride away.
You’ll see from the photos that the 4 guys that headed to Greenbush with Bart’s and surfed it totally alone… scored BIG TIME. Huge gaping barrels, absolute sheet glass, meant that the Bush was serving up its famed best. Other guests shared with guests from 2 boats at Macas, heaps of waves to go around.
And right now we have a 2.3m long period swell hitting which we expect will create perfect conditions again at Macaronis and Roxies will also be a target spot for us to hit during this upcoming swell.
Of our current guests, 3 of them have extended their trips by two weeks, 2 of them by one week, as a result of the epic un-crowded conditions we have been enjoying.
For the 2 weeks ahead we have less then 8 people booked each week, so if you are after a last minute trip then now is the time to take advantage of the least crowded conditions since this place was discovered!!
Cheers

March Surf Report – update from Macaronis Resort
Hey Crew
Well it’s been another great start to the season here at Macas Resort with some super fun waves enjoyed by all. We have barely had a flat day during March; there has usually always been something on the doorstep with not too many people around either.
Matt and I enjoyed a particularly fun session in early March on our lonesome with 3-5 ft double ups glassy perfection, easy to get a 20 barrels in a session when its like that, then mid March Josh Kerr and crew from Tengiri showed up and enjoyed another solid swell that hit over a few days, prior to our first guests arriving on the 16th of March.
Our first week was quite, with just 2 guests being Sam and Phil from the UK, and Christian ‘Barts’ signed on as surf guide. The first week we enjoyed some solid sessions on our own, with the odd boat passing through but generally it has been pretty quite. Waves the first week were consistent in the 3-4 foot range, so it was the perfect opening of the season for us and we were all stoked.
The following week Dicky, Tom, Matt, Mike and Sam arrived from the UK, plus Claus ‘the German dry lander’ being his fourth visit to Macas Resort in 3 years. At the last minute we also had 7 guests book from Australia who were supposed to be on a boat charter but had to cancel due to permit problems. So the 7 Aussies, being Paul, Nash, Robbo, Matt, Damo, Ryan and Daniel joined in on the trip and kept their chins up admirably, despite being let down by their charter operator.
The surf in the last week of March admittedly wasn’t as consistent as the previous weeks, but still we got fun waves pretty much every day, and also did a couple of trips to surrounding breaks. We did not see a single charter boat for 7 days straight, which was a bonus. With some bad weather hitting mid week, this also meant everybody was quite content happy sticking around the resort and surfing mainly at Macas.
This week is the first week of April, and we again have a quite week with Danny and Simon from Australia, a couple of Poms, Jason (3rd visit) and Mark, Gerry from Italy and Claus is still here consumed by Yoga, the waves and his usual good vibes. We have been getting some sick sessions; last night just 4 of us enjoyed the last hour of glass absolutely pumping with some really smackable lips and some deep tubes reeling through.
But what can I say, this is pretty damn normal as Macas is such a pumping wave and so consistent.
For the 3 weeks ahead it is still not too busy, so if anybody would like to join in for a trip then just drop us an email to mark@macaronisresort.com
Other News:
We have Byron lads Danny Wills, Garret Parkes and Sol Bailey headed over in early June for a week at Macas, while Sol and his dad Andrew will be doing a month here while Andrew also does some filming for guests…. Soli should be ripping by the end of that stint!!
Adriano Desouza and Silvana Lima are coming to Macas Resort for 2 weeks in May, for a training session and to hopefully score some great Macaronis and Greenbush epicness. Adriano did a trip last year on Indies 4 for Red Bull and scored BIG time at Macas and Greenbush, and having visited Macas Resort before, he now has opted to just stay on location at Macas for his stint in the Ments in 2010.
CURRENT SPECIAL: Each week booked at Macas Resort currently includes a free deep tissue massage, 1 free can of beer daily and inclusive wireless internet, from US$1630 for 8 days / 9 nights OR US$2770 for 15 days / 16 nights.
NON-SURFING BACKPACKER GIRLS are now offered dorm style accommodation on the second floor of the main building. Let’s face it, 90% of our guests are male surfers, so no harm in offering backpacker girls the opportunity to visit at a cheaper rate, boosting the atmosphere with a more even balance of sexes on the island, whilst having no effect on numbers in the line up….!!
This offer is only available to those girls already in Indo, and seeking something a little different from their travel experience.
The opening rate for back packer girls is US$75 per night including 3 meals daily prepared by our chefs, shared dormitory style accommodation and bathroom facilities in the main building.
* Please note spots are limited and dependant on other guests booked at the resort during that time. Please drop us a line to check on availability if you’re interested.
Charter Boat Visiting Hours have now been introduced to protect privacy of in-house guests staying at Macaronis Resort. This will create a system so everybody is not trying to use resort facilities at one time, and so when charter boat guests come in to get a massage or do their internet in the afternoon, this will be a prime time for resort guests to hit the line up. Charter boat guests are welcome to visit between 4:00pm and 7:00pm daily.

2nd of March 2010
Hey Crew!!!
Well we're back with another season at Macas Resort, and crikeys it's warm over here after 2 months in Tasmania. Got some west coast trips on whilst home and got plenty of crayfish and abolone to go around which I miss the most spending the summer months in Indo. Although always nice to come back and get on to catching some big fish!! Speaking of which, there have been plenty of big GT's swimming around in the channel on the way into the lagoon the past few days, a good sign for the good times ahead. Also got a new professionally made speargun, so should be able to bring a few home this year!!
I got to Macas last wednesday and have been hard at it marking out our reception building which is going up near the small jetty (with board storage area, accommodation for security and boat drivers, out-door shower for when you get back from the surf and key drop), a lagoon style swimming pool going in beside the cafe and a few other exciting developments coming up, asides from maintenance being done on buildings.
We have our 6.8m aluminum boat being renovated at this moment powered by 115hp (available for charter to breaks further afield than Bat Cave and Greenbush), and we have just purchased a brand new Quintrex 4.2m aluminum run about powered by 40hp, a Quintrex 3.9m aluminum for accessing local breaks and a 3.5m Quintrex that will become the new tender for Indies Explorer, as well as our two traditional dug out long boats.
The surf the last few days has been perfect in the medium size range 3-4ft. I was out at the tower looking at the possibility of puting some lights up for night surfing, and at that time it was a low tide but the waves were absolutely smoking peeling right down the point with absolutely no body out for at least 2-3 hours. The crew from King Milenium being the only boat in the bay, eventually got back out there, seems they must have had a fairly solid morning session!!
The last little swell lasted about 4 days and is a good sign that the roaring forties are kicking back in again sending some long period swells up this way. And on the horrizon we have a week of very long period swells coming up in the 1.6m range @15-19 sec which will no doubt produce Macas perfection for the week ahead, looks like it could be a repeate of last years great start to the season. Unfortunately I'll be back in Padang departing tomorrow, to get our staffing organised for our opening on March 16, just 2 surfers booked if anybody is interested??? The following week we also have just 8 surfers..... please let us know if you'd like to join us!!
Anyway from 9th of March onwards we'll have our camera gear out here and will be able to provide some shots of the surf for you to froth over. Shame we havent opened a little earlier, we actually had a cancellation of 12 guys booked for the first two weeks in March and looking at the swell charts its probable they'll be kicking them selves. Well, except for the group leader who unfortunatley was in a car accident preventing the trip from going ahead, I hope your doing ok TB...!
Ok crew we'll be back with more news from Macas Resort soon, looking forward to the waves ahead, I hope some of you will be able to make it over to join us!!
P.S join our facebook group to get more regular updates of the surf, photos and video footage, as well as some promotional specials offered on our groups page called "Guests and Friends of Macaronis Resort Mentawais Indonesia".
Be back in touch soon!!
Cheers
Mark @ Macas
2009 Season Overview:
Year 2009 was one of the best seasons I can remember in my 9 years living in the Mentawais. Swells were very consistent and winds were not overly influential; in fact the whole season basically pumped, with early season perhaps offering the best conditions with some large swells also hitting early.
This year we opened for trading in mid January with a few guests visiting from New Zealand and Australia. Myself, Christian, Dylan and Margy enjoyed fun waves every day on our own, and as always the early season produced some excellent fishing. On the way to Macas the first day of the trip from Sikakap we managed to hook up 6 Tenggiri about 15kg each. This first trip we saw no boats and enjoyed Macas entirely to ourselves with waves every day in the 2-4 ft range; although not that big we still enjoyed fun conditions and some very long sessions in the water.
Later during February whilst we completed some maintenance for the season ahead, we had Matt Graziano visit from Estonia, a fellow partner in Macas Resort. Matt stayed for 6 weeks whilst spending some time teaching an English course in Silabu Village. During February Matt and I also scored some really good waves totally alone at Macas. Mid Feb the swells began getting more solid; I even somehow managed to snap my old faithful 6’2 on a solid 4-5 foot day in February.
March soon arrived and this was an amazing month to say the least. In March we had a few small groups visit including Claus who was on his 4th trip to Macaronis Resort in 4 years. With very few boats around probably due to the effect of the global financial crisis, Huey sent in 100% perfection with some of the most solid double up swells of the season hitting in flawless conditions. Some of these swells were perfect SW direction and the double ups produced some incredible waves reeling down the reef; and the morning and evening sessions were some of the best sessions I can remember in the Mentawais (sorry no photos of these sessions, but definitely in the memory bank!!).
During March the 1 – 2 boats that dropped by every now and again were all laid back, and the guests on board were mainly older guys just looking for some mellow Mentawai perfection which they got and a bit more. One day late in March, we surfed fun waves at Macas with some crew from Barrenjoey, who had planned to head to the Hole that evening, and we awoke the following morning to find the bay completely empty with 6 foot solid perfection on our doorstep, one of the best sessions of the year with just 4 of us surfing for 6 hours straight, sooooo many big glassy barrels that day and perfect conditions for Claus, Dan, Matt and myself.
April produced similar conditions. In early April we had a group of pro's visit from New Jersey who had a good trip but unfortunately the swell and wind conditions were not exactly what we’d hoped for but still they managed to get some fun waves, including a few solid sessions at Thunders in the last couple of days. We tried to convince the group to stay on the following week as a bomb swell was on the way, but as some of the guys had to head home for other commitments it could not be arranged. Low and behold the swell that second week was double to triple over head flawless with solid pipe style barrels, with only the odd boat dropping by for a visit now and again throughout the week.
The month of May began to get busier, with some pro's visiting Macaronis including Ross Williams, Rob Machado, Brad Gerlach and the Red Bull team including Mick Fanning, Adriano De Souza, Jordy Smith and several other young guns. Apparently there was a gap in the pro circuit at this time and suddenly Macas and Greenbush had turned into a entertainment park for the pros ………. with some amazing big glassy barrels scored at Greenbush (click here to view on you tube) and some incredible surfing at Macaronis (click here to view on you tube).
June and July were prime time Macas. With a fairly mild season for winds, these two months had consistent solid swells hitting regularly and there were that many opportunities to surf Macas and surrounding breaks that there were heaps of waves to go around (May in fact was a little busier). Most of our guests being competent surfers over this period enjoyed the excellent quality of the waves, also visiting Greenbush and Lances regularly.
August and September produced some of the more solid swells of the year but true to form, there was a bit more wind about during these months but still plenty of opportunity to score good waves at Macas and surrounding breaks. During this time we surfed Silabu Left regularly and always on our own, and also Bat Cave was a popular choice, either heading up doing a day trip on Indies Explorer or doing a trip in the long boat with a picnic lunch on the deserted Bat Cave Island beach.
Throughout October things started winding down. The second week in October was a magic week of swell which everybody was totally stoked with having 16 guests at the resort surfing perfect 4-6 foot waves every day, but apart from that things started to slow down, still with some quality waves around but not as consistent as the earlier months. Luck of the draw really, considering late October 2008 we were still surfing waves in the 6 foot range whilst Robbie Page was visiting Macas Resort with a group of guests from Portugal.
Also in October we felt the effects of the tragic earthquake that occurred in Padang on September 30th. As a result we had a few cancellations – and had the conditions been epic then it could have been a repeat of March with epic surf and nobody around to surf with, but we weren’t that lucky with the swell in the end.
Anyway a great year of waves all round... hope to see you at Macas in 2010 !!
Cheers

2008 Season Overview...
Well the 2008 season started out in a mad rush as usual, after totally refurbing the Indies Explorer inside and out after purchasing the boat in late 2007. Indies Explorer has been an excellent addition to the resort operation owing to its size and ability to carry large groups and supplies, as well as acting as back up transport to Padang if ever required.
Our early trips in March 2008 saw excellent consistency of clean waves in the 3-4 foot range. Conditions in March and most of April were mostly very good as well with light winds and glassy conditions. In late March a solid 6 ft swell hit late one afternoon with only 3-4 guys out, a nice surprise for the crew that were out surfing that arvo.

Above: Macas late March 2008, a big swell hitting with only a couple of guys out!!
The early season of March, April and May produced some very good fishing in the Macas area. We scored some nice Coral and Carnation Trout which are great cooked Sumatran style with coconut curry paste and grilled over coconut ash BBQ. We also scored plenty of Tengirri (Spanish Mackeral) and a few Great Trevally that also went down a treat on the BBQ. See a few of our fish photos below caught over this period...
June and July as always produced some excellent waves with larger swells arriving resulting in some bigger, heavier barreling waves. But as usual during these months there was a bit more wind around meaning conditions varied from day to day. Then arrival of August was pretty much similar conditons, but true to form August gave us a bit more wet weather than usual that soon cleared up toward the end of the month and conditions again settled.

Above: A nice little barrel May 2008
Swells arriving from early September onwards produced some epic waves due to weather conditions stabilizing and there being regular glassy conditions. The SE trades did not influence too much in 2008, meaning although Macas is a great wave to surf in on-shore conditions anyway, we did not need to worry too much as the winds were often off-shore all morning and sometimes all day even.
Above: A nice little September tube, there were plenty of them to go around and many of the larger variety as well.
In early October we had Nigel Wallace and his mate John Kolehmainen from Tassie visiting who had won the trip in the West Coast Classic of which Macaronis Resort is an official sponsor. Conditions continued to please with glassy conditions and solid swells arriving regularly in the early part, then we experienced a 1 week small wave period where guests surfed mostly at Thunders that week, before we scored another nice swell at the end of October.
With just a group of 5 Portuguese lads, Damo from Tassie and Robbie Page - 2 times World Grand Masters Champ and Pipe Master staying at Macas Resort, we all scored some epic waves and had a great time surfing waves that were glassy all day long in the 6-8 feet range. That last swell was a really nice way to end the season, that's for sure.
Above: An empty 6 foot tube going through unridden at Macas, late October 2008
Perhaps our only disapointment on that last swell was the lack of communication between charter boat operators who again had shown up in a group of 8 boats to try and surf Macas even with a nnumber of guests staying at Macas Resort. This re-enforces that the Mooring Buoy system soon to be launched in 2009 is vital for long term sustainability and is the only solution to reduce unnecessary over-crowding of Macaronis by charter boat visitors.
Please stay tuned for 2009 Reports, until then we wish you all a happy and safe festive season and would like to give our many thanks to everybody that has supported Macaronis Resort this year, whether you stayed at Macaronis Resort or just visited off one of the charter boats for a beer at the bar.
We hope to see you all back again at Macaronois Resort in 2009!!
Warmest Regards,
From All Macaronis Resort Staff and Management.
