In year 2003, Macaronis Resort property was purchased from Mr Amborosius Siritoitet, more commonly known around these parts as, 'Pak Ambu'. Pak Ambu hosted the first surfers to camp out on land and surf Macaronis some 18 years ago, his property previously known by surf ferals back then as the "back swamps".

10 years later in year 2001, Mark Loughran who lived in Silabu Village for a period, set up an Indonesian PMA Company with his partner Tony Mascali and commenced construction of Macaronis Resort in year 2004.
One of the major motivations behind building Macaronis Resort was to provide locals with employment and a future in the tourism industry. In 2004, Management also agreed to contribute Rp.15.000 per guest per day to assist in community projects in the village, focusing mainly on improving health and education standards.
Macaronis Resort contributed approximately US$5,000 toward completion of Silabu Church in year 2004, US$2,000 for purchase of a new generator for the village in year 2005, US$4,000 that was used mainly to provide electricity to each home in the village in 2006, and in 2007 Resort Management offered further assistance, mainly for earthquake relief after village homes were damaged in mid 2007 after an earth quake struck the area (Macaronis Resort buildings were fortunately not damaged).
Overall, the most beneficial factor of all for the local people has been employment, allowing them to learn new skills while also boosting the local economy allowing villagers to develop local businesses of their own.
Senior staff recruited from the mainland enable us to train local employees, while at the same time maintaining a high level of service for our guests. The resort currently employs approximately 30 staff members, approximately 50% Mentawaian and 50% from the mainland.
